BAYLOR BOUND
honest advice from honestly nice people
By Calleigh Swift What's up Class of 2020! I speak for all of us here when I say we are so excited to have y’all on campus in the fall! Your freshman year is one that you won’t soon forget and I have six tips that will help make your freshman year one of the best of your life! 1. Stock up on big shirts and Nike shorts. You only have to be on campus for all of two minutes to realize that the unspoken Baylor “uniform” is an oversized Comfort Colors tshirt and Nike shorts. I speak from experience in saying that this outfit will be one of the most comfortable outfits you will ever wear. Also, if you have the unfortunate displeasure of having an 8:00 am class, Nikes and a big tshirt will save your life, or at least give you 30 more minutes of sleep in the morning. But if dressing up for class is your thing-go for it! There are plenty of people who will complement you on your shoes, and give you mad props for dressing up in the morning! 2. Do not dress up to run the Line.I can’t tell you how many sandals and cowboy boots were ruined this past year through running the Line. Tennis shoes are going to be your go to shoes if you want to run the Line. Also, remember that you’re going to be running the Line in the unbearable Texas heat, and football games have the tendency to be at like 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon when heat exhaustion is a real thing, so stay hydrated. In case you’re new to Texas, I just want to say it gets hot in August, and sweat is a real thing. So that make-up you spent 30 minutes perfecting? You’re going to sweat it all off. And those perfect, bouncy curls you worked so hard for? They’re going to fall flat. Your Line jersey, Nikes, and tennis shoes are the perfect gameday outfit for the Line. 3. Smile, and always keep an open mind.Baylor is widely known for being a conservative, Baptist university. Few people realize how diverse our student body actually is. Over the past two years, I have met people from China, India, and Germany. I also have friends at Baylor who are Hindu, Muslim, and Atheist. All of this is to say that you’re going to meet people who act, think, and speak differently than you do it’s a guarantee. However, just because they act, think, or speak differently than you do doesn’t mean that they can’t become your best friend. 4. Do not compare yourself to other girls on campus. As a fellow woman, I fall into this trap all the time. We are on campus with so many other women who are all beautiful in their own way, and yet we sit there and say “If only my hair looked like that,” or “I wish I was in [insert sorority here].” You are beautiful. You are worthy. You are loved. You are cared for. You are a fantastic human being. You deserve to be here. And you see that girl walking right next to you? She is all of these things too. No one else can play your part. 5. Eat a Memo cookie every now and then.First of all, a Memo cookie can turn your day around. Mrs. Mei is the sweetest human being to walk the face of planet Earth. The combination of her smiling face and a warm, gooey chocolate chip cookie is the BEST THING EVER. Your freshman year will go by so fast, you don't believe me, but it will. So enjoy your Memo cookie, and make the most of your first year at Baylor. 6. Have fun!Because that's what your freshman year is all about. You make friends, and meet new people, and go on all sorts of adventures. The people you meet, and the friendships you start to make are the ones that last you a lifetime. I met this girl on the first day of classes freshman year, and she became my best friend. I have more fun with her than anyone else. That is my hope for you - to find the people who make you laugh, to find the people who will camp out with you when College Game Day comes to town, to find the people who watch Grey's Anatomy with you every Thursday and The Bachelor every Monday. So, class of 2020, have some fun :) Y'all, I am so excited to have the chance to meet y'all and get to know y'all. Come find me on Facebook, like all my pictures on Instagram (that would take some dedication). I would love to grab coffee with you at Common Grounds, or grab a treat from Magnolia Bakery in the fall-don't be afraid to hit me up! :) Calleigh is going to be a Junior at Baylor. She loves elephants, raspberry lemonade, and polka dots. She takes way too many pictures, and blogs super inconsistently, but she can’t wait to meet you guys in the fall!
