honest advice from honestly nice people

GUESS WHO’S BACK. If you didn’t guess, it’s me! The coffee addict! But this time we ain’t talkin bout coffee. Although I might sneak it in there. We talkin about my only other passion in life. FOOTBALL. That might be an exaggeration. I am a driven person and have other passions besides coffee and football. I mean, I’m a grade A napper if I do say so myself. (and I do). BUT GUYS (and girls) FOOTBALL. AMIRIGHT?! Maybe itsnot as big of a deal to you as it is to me, but would you have clicked on this article if you didn’t care just a little bit??? (ok like if you clicked on it because you think I’m funny and you like reading my posts I might cry because that’s is SO SWEET).
If you’re going to be a freshman in the fall, get ready for some pretty fantastic traditions. Baylor football is one of my favorite things. Like. In the whole universe. I’m a 100%-diehard-love-my-boys-in-green-and-gold kinda fan. Even my dog has an ADORABLE game day jersey. Football is love. Football is life.
Now, things are going to be a little different this year, but I have faith in my God and I have faith in my boys. No matter what happens this year on the field, win or lose, its always a great day to be a Baylor bear. SO, in order to help you navigate the crazy, wonderful, excitement that is Baylor Gameday, I’ve got 10 easy tips for you!
1. RUN THE LINE
Seriously. I know this seems like an obvious thing, but this is one of the coolest traditions I think Baylor has to offer. In case you didn’t know, Baylor is one of the only schools who allows players and students on the field at the same time. We were grandfathered in because… like… we’re clearly the best. So take pride in that! This is the only time you’ll be able to have this experience (until you’re a senior but that’s only one game). Plus, you get the best seats in the house! The line is so cool and so much fun! Terrifying… but so so much fun. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
2. Come Early, Be Loud, Stay Late
Come early. Show up like… an hour or more before game time. Wait in the heat. Make new friends! The time before the game is almost as much fun as the game itself. All of gameday is my favorite. Morning games can be rough, so grab some coffee ( ;) ) and get to the stadium!
Be loud. Scream your head off. Give into all of the cliché game day things. The “make some noise” screen, the 3rddown yelling, the sic ‘em at every kick off, all of it. Its more than worth it. Show our boys on the field that Baylor nation has their back!
Stay late. Don’t be that person who leaves just because we’re DEMOLISHING the other team! And don’t be that person that left the 2014 TCU game in the 3rd quarter and MISSED THE BEST COMEBACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS EVER SEEN (in my opinion). Sometimes you gotta stick it out to be able to share those incredible memories with your friends.
Y’all. Texas is hot. (duh). But like… even if you think you know how hot it is, you don’t. its hotter. WEAR SUNSCREEN. Especially for those 2:30 games that never seem to cool off. Sunscreen is a life saver and you definitely won’t regret putting on a ton.
WATER WATER H2O DEHYDRATION NO NO NO!!! Same message as sunscreen. DRINK SO MUCH WATER. I can remember games where I almost passed out, partially because of dehydration and partially because of how loud I was screaming. Even if you think you’ve had enough, drink more, so you can yell louder.
5. CLOSED TOED (lol that's a funny word) SHOES
When running the line, this is a must. Yes those sandals are cute and comfy, I know your cowboy boots look TOTES PRESH with your line jersey! But they make running the line so much more difficult, and trust me. You don’t want to be that person that falls and takes half the freshman class down with them. Its not fun for anyone except the upperclassmen.
6. Tea and Honey
This is the best remedy for the lack of a voice that you’ll have the next day. If you didn’t lose your voice, you weren’t yelling loud enough. Hot tea and honey makes that sore throat go away faster than you can say “I hope I have my voice back before that speech I have to give Monday!” No one wants to do the whisper chant only because that’s the only volume they have.
7. Remember who the enemy is
TCU is always the enemy. Also OU. They suck. And UT. And Kansas… even though they’re SO NICE. The point is, don’t turn your back on our boys just because we’re down a few points. If the stands don’t have faith in our team, then how can our team have faith in themselves! Yes there will be some disappointments both on the home field and at away games, but our boys need us to have their back. Itscrazy how much the fan base really does affect the way the team plays.
Oh. Also. Big 12 refs suck. Always. They too are the enemy.
8. DO YOU HAVE YOUR EXIT BUDDY?!
FIND A FRIEND AND HOLD ONTO THEM. This goes for when you’re running the line and when you’re leaving the stadium. It is so much less stressful trying to get from point a to point b when there is someone there to walk next to you. (Great metaphor for Jesus right? Life is less stressful, even in the craziest times when we know Jesus is walking right beside us and won’t let us get lost!)
Also, designate a meeting spot with your friends OTHER THAN THE RG3 STATUE (literally everyone meets there) so that in the event you do get separated, you can always find each other!
9. Get ready for chaos!
Gameday is crazy. All week you’re looking forward to that home game in beautiful McLane stadium and then its finally here! Campus is LITERALLY buzzing and there are so many people in Waco that the drive through line at chick-fil-a is 700 miles long. But the chaos is good. Itsexciting and its worth every stressful minute.
10. Have fun!
At the end of the day, win or lose, it’s just a game. Football isn’t the most important thing going on in your life, as much as I wish I could say it was. So don’t take it TOO seriously. No game is worth shattering your glasses because you threw them down on the ground so hard. Yes its okay to be hurt by a loss, but don’t let it affect your mood for the rest of the day. Enjoy every second Baylor football has to offer because before you know it, football season will be over and you’ll have to settle* for basketball.
*go to basketball games. THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN. You’re not actually settling.
Football season is going to be here before you know it! Stock up on green face paint, face tattoos, and sign making materials because it’s going to be a great year! I’m pumped if you haven’t noticed. #sicem5ever.
